Understanding the Financial Claims Scheme Protection

For many Australians establishing a self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF), investments tend to dominate the conversation. Yet, every SMSF, regardless of its investment strategy, requires something fundamental: a cash account.

One consideration that can easily be overlooked is whether an SMSF cash account is held with an Australian Authorised Deposit-taking Institution (ADI) and therefore eligible for protection under the Australian Government’s Financial Claims Scheme (FCS).

The scheme protects eligible deposits up to $250,000 per account holder, per ADI, should that institution fail. SMSFs are recognised as eligible account holders under the scheme, subject to the scheme’s rules and limits.

The distinction is important because not every cash account offered alongside an SMSF investment platform is necessarily structured in the same way.

The Next Generation of Trustees…

As SMSFs continue to attract younger Australians seeking greater involvement in their retirement planning, attention is increasingly shifting beyond investments to the infrastructure that supports them, including administration, banking arrangements and cash management.

After navigating two of the most significant economic disruptions of the past two decades, the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, many young Australians have developed a heightened appreciation for financial security and institutional safeguards.

In many cases, the question is no longer simply “What should I invest in?”

It is increasingly “How is my SMSF set up, and what protections are available?”

The SuperConcepts Approach

When evaluating SMSF administration providers, trustees should understand where their cash account is held, whether the institution is an Australian ADI, and what protections may apply.

At SuperConcepts, the default SMSF cash account is provided through Macquarie Bank.

Macquarie Bank is an Australian Authorised Deposit-taking Institution regulated by APRA, meaning eligible deposits held within applicable accounts may qualify for protection under the Financial Claims Scheme, subject to the scheme’s terms and limits.

Depending on the provider and platform structure, cash may be held through arrangements that do not qualify for protection under the Financial Claims Scheme. Specifically, the scheme also does not apply to funds held at overseas branches of Australian banks or accounts denominated in foreign currencies.

Why Cash Accounts are Important

This is particularly relevant given how cash holdings have evolved within SMSFs. While trustees are often associated with investment decision-making, cash remains a significant component of many portfolios. Whether maintaining liquidity for pension payments, meeting tax obligations, funding future investments or simply navigating periods of market uncertainty, most SMSFs maintain some level of cash holdings at all times.

The role of an SMSF cash account extends beyond facilitating transactions and should be considered part of the fund’s operational resilience and continuity. Understanding where an SMSF’s cash is held, how the account operates and whether government protections may apply are important considerations for SMSF trustees.

While investment performance will always matter, understanding how an SMSF is structured and where its assets are held can be equally important in supporting confidence, security and effective fund administration.
