ATO to switch off ELS option for SMSF annual returns

Oct 24, 2017, 17:04 PM

The ATO has announced that from 11 November 2017, the Practitioner Lodgement Service (PLS) will be the only electronic channel to lodge 2017 SMSF annual returns.

The PLS, using the Standard Business Reporting (SBR) format, is the main electronic lodgement channel and is gradually replacing the Electronic Lodgement Service (ELS).

SuperMate has been using SBR for several years and we extended its use to SMSF annual returns and fund Income Tax Returns under the new PLS from July 2016. The switching off of ELS as a lodgement channel will not affect your ability to lodge the 2017 SMSF annual return and tax returns via SuperMate.

The many benefits of this new lodgement system include:

  • A very simple, one-off setup process
  • Multiple tax agents can lodge from one SuperMate site
  • Immediate validation and acknowledgement of lodgement
  • Removes the need to maintain ELS passwords in various places
  • Eliminates the need to export files to external software for lodgement (however, this functionality is available in SuperMate).

To lodge using PLS via SuperMate, each tax agent will need to nominate and authorise SuperConcepts as their Hosted SBR Software Provider with the ATO and advise the ATO of their unique SuperMate software ID. This is also required to validate returns ready for lodgement.

This can be done easily by the tax agent using either of the following methods:

  • Phone 1300 85 22 32
AUSkey not required. Normal proof of record ownership will apply to the caller.
  • Online via Access Manager
An existing administrator AUSkey is required.
